TikTok Isn’t Just for Scrolling Anymore: It’s an Alternative Search Engine

For as long as most digital marketers can remember, our playbooks have lived in two tidy, separate boxes. On one side, you have paid search: the pragmatic, intent-driven world of Google Ads management, where users type what they want and we give them a blue link. On the other side, you have paid social: the land of passive thumb-stopping creative, snappy hooks, and algorithmic serendipity designed to spark demand out of thin air.

Well, it might be time to put down your tea and take a breath, because those boundaries are officially blurring. We asked a while back whether the lines are blurring between SEO and social media marketing. TikTok has now answered it.

TikTok isn’t just an entertainment app where people go to watch comedy sketches or learn dance routines anymore. It has quietly evolved into one of the most powerful search engines on the web. The platform now processes billions of user queries every single day, with search volume soaring by more than 40% year on year.

If your paid media strategy still treats TikTok as purely a top-of-funnel awareness playground, you are likely leaving serious revenue on the table. Let’s have a proper chat about what social search actually looks like, how user intent works on TikTok, and how to build a paid campaign that captures high-intent customers right when they are looking to buy.

Why Are People Searching on TikTok?

To understand how to advertise on TikTok search, we have to look at why people are typing queries into that little magnifying glass in the first place. It is worth understanding what social search means for SEO before you spend a penny on it.

According to research by WARC, conducted in partnership with TikTok, an eye-opening 86% of Gen Z internet users in the US now use TikTok’s search function every single week, putting it within touching distance of the leading traditional search engine on 90%. Back in 2022, Google’s own Prabhakar Raghavan told a Fortune conference that almost 40% of young people looking for somewhere to have lunch skip Google Maps and Search entirely and head to TikTok or Instagram instead.

Why the sudden shift? It comes down to what users are actually looking for.

When someone searches on Google, they are usually asking: “What is the definitive, factual answer?” When they search on TikTok, they are asking a fundamentally different question: “Whose perspective can I trust, and what does this actually look like in real life?”

TikTok users don’t want a wall of static text or sponsored affiliate blog posts packed with SEO padding. They want visual proof. They want to see a foundation applied to real skin, hear an honest critique of a travel destination, or watch a 30-second tutorial on how to style an outfit. It is search powered by social consensus and community validation.

Crucially, this hasn’t created a total abandonment of traditional search engines, but rather an interconnected dance. Around 38% of consumers start their commercial research on Google before heading to TikTok to see the product in action, while 34% discover an idea on TikTok and hop over to Google to verify pricing and logistics. The customer journey is no longer a neat, linear line. It is an infinite loop of discovery, validation, and action.

Getting Under the Bonnet: How TikTok Search Ads Work

Recognising this shift, TikTok has introduced dedicated search ad formats designed to place your brand directly within search results pages (SRP).

For media buyers, there are two primary ways to play:

1. Automatic Search Placement (The Search Ads Toggle)

This is an automated feature within standard In-Feed auction ad groups. You don’t manage manual keyword lists here; instead, TikTok’s machine learning scans your video assets, captions, and landing page URLs to dynamically match your ads to relevant queries. It’s low maintenance and acts as an effortless safety net to capture contextual searches.

2. Standalone Search Ads Campaigns

Managed through TikTok Ads Manager’s Search Center, this is where performance marketers get true control. Here, you set dedicated budgets, establish positive keyword lists, apply negative keywords, and choose match types:

Broad Match: Matches queries containing your keywords in any order, alongside related themes and synonyms (ideal for early campaign learning).

Phrase Match: Ensures your core term appears in the exact specified order.

Exact Match: Fires only when a user types your exact phrasing or close grammatical variants.

You can also input up to 10,000 negative keywords per ad group to keep your budget clean and avoid unwanted impressions. The same discipline applies here as anywhere else, so it pays to master keyword research before you build the lists.

One important caveat for UK advertisers: TikTok has been rolling Search Ads Campaign out from the US first, with other markets following. Check availability in your own Ads Manager before you plan a budget around it. Automatic Search Placement has had far wider availability.

The Paid Social Playbook: Planning Around Search Intent

Switching your paid social mindset from passive interruption to active query capture requires a few strategic tweaks. Here is the game plan we recommend:

1. Stop Siloing Search and Social

The biggest mistake you can make is treating TikTok Search as an isolated direct-response experiment. TikTok’s own platform data shows that advertisers running dedicated Search Ads alongside In-Feed campaigns see an average 20% incremental lift in conversions at the same or improved CPA.

Even more telling: roughly 18% of people who view an in-feed ad without converting go on to search for that brand on TikTok and convert via a search ad. Your feed ads create curiosity; your search ads close the deal. Allocate roughly 10% to 25% of your TikTok budget specifically to search intent capture to catch that downstream traffic, which is exactly the sort of decision that goes into building a PPC channel mix that pays off. It is the clearest example yet of why siloed marketing is costing you leads.

2. Give the Algorithm Room to Breathe

Don’t launch a TikTok search campaign with just two or three hyper-specific exact-match keywords. The auction system needs data.

Start by seeding your ad groups with at least 20 relevant keywords using broad match. Maintain a healthy budget-to-bid ratio. TikTok recommends establishing a daily ad group budget roughly five times your target CPA (or a 20:1 budget-to-bid ratio). Let the campaign run untouched for three to five days so it can hit the ~50 conversion mark needed to clear the initial learning phase. Once you’ve gathered search term data, you can prune wasted spend with negatives and spin out dedicated ad groups for high-performing terms.

3. Creative is Still King (Optimise for “TikTok SEO”)

Unlike text-only Google Search ads, your creative asset is your ad copy. But TikTok’s indexing engine doesn’t just read your targeting settings. It transcribes spoken audio via Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) and reads on-screen text using Optical Character Recognition (OCR). If creative is the bottleneck, purpose-built social media assets are usually the fastest fix.

To maximise your ad relevance and click-through rates:

Say the keyword: Vocalize your main search term or problem within the first three seconds of the video, which matters because short-form video hooks make or break your paid social ROI.

Show the keyword: Use high-contrast text overlays highlighting the user’s specific query.

Embrace Spark Ads: Repurpose authentic user-generated content or creator reviews rather than hyper-polished corporate commercials. Searchers want authenticity; creator-led assets consistently drive higher dwell time and lower acquisition costs. It is the same reason polished ads are struggling across paid social.

Test Image Carousels: Don’t overlook swipeable carousels, particularly for retail or multi-product lines. They frequently yield higher click-through rates at a lower cost-per-click compared to standard video. The principle is the same as matching your paid social ads to the platform anywhere else.

Does It Actually Move the Needle?

It’s easy to get sceptical about new ad formats, but the early numbers speak for themselves. In US and Canadian retail meta-analyses, campaigns that added TikTok search ads delivered a 2.0x higher purchase lift compared to feed-only campaigns.

Enterprise brands are seeing clear returns. These figures come from TikTok’s own published case studies, so treat them as indicative rather than typical:

Clinique UK turned on Automatic Search Placement alongside creator-led Spark Ads and achieved a 441% increase in conversion rate and a 51% boost in CTR.

American Eagle built a dedicated keyword architecture targeting seasonal search trends, cutting their acquisition costs by 46% while doubling their ROAS.

Steve Madden structured ad groups by footwear silhouette, driving a $4.08 incremental ROAS and lowering CPA by 54% compared to standard non-search campaigns.

Final Thoughts: Meet Your Customers Where They’re Looking

Digital marketing doesn’t stand still for long. Just as we learned to adapt our SEO strategies to search engine updates, we now have to adapt our paid social strategies to user behaviour.

Audiences aren’t just waiting around for algorithms to guess what they want; they are actively searching for solutions, recommendations, and reviews inside video apps. By blending the rigour of keyword targeting with authentic, visual storytelling, you can meet high-intent shoppers at the exact moment of discovery.

If your current TikTok advertising is still stuck running generic broad awareness ads, it might be time for a fresh approach. Take a look at your search terms, align your creative with real user queries, and start capturing the demand that’s already searching for you. A PPC account audit is a sensible place to start if you are not sure where the waste is sitting.
