5 Easy Ways To Raise Your Game on X (Formally Twitter)

Are you making the most of the time you spend on X?

With hundreds of millions of active users worldwide, making it one of the most powerful platforms for building brand visibility and reaching new audiences. Despite the rebranding and the changes that have come with it, the fundamentals of performing well on the platform still hold true, and getting them right can make a real difference to how your business shows up online.

Whether you’ve been on X for years or you’re still finding your feet, it’s worth taking stock of whether your current marketing strategyon X is actually working.

In this article, we share five practical ways to improve your X marketing strategy and get more from the time you invest in the platform.

1. Think About Your Profile Design

One of the simplest ways to attract attention to your account is a well-designed profile. It sounds obvious, but it’s something a surprising number of businesses overlook. When someone lands on your X profile — whether through a search, a retweet, or a mention — your profile is effectively your first impression, and it needs to do some heavy lifting quickly.

Your profile picture is the element that appears most frequently across the platform, sitting alongside every post, reply, and retweet you make, so for businesses it should almost always be your logo — displayed clearly and legibly even at small sizes, without anything too detailed or text-heavy.

Your header image is often more overlooked, as the large banner at the top of your profile page, it’s a good place to reinforce your branding or showcase a current campaign, and unlike your profile picture, it can be updated regularly to stay relevant.

It’s also worth making sure your display name, handle, and linked website are all accurate and up to date, as inconsistencies across platforms can quietly erode trust and a broken link is a missed opportunity every time someone visits your page.

The overall goal is consistency — your X profile should feel like a natural extension of your wider brand, so that anyone already familiar with your business recognises it immediately, and anyone new to it gets a clear and professional first impression.

2. Rewrite Your Bio

Your bio is one of the first things people read when they visit your profile, and with a 160 character limit on X, every word needs to earn its place. It’s a small amount of space to convey who you are and what you do, but getting it right can have a meaningful impact on whether someone decides to follow you or move on.

For businesses, the bio should clearly communicate what you do, who you do it for, and ideally what sets you apart. Avoid vague or generic language — phrases like “passionate about delivering results” don’t tell a visitor anything useful. Instead, think about the specific terms your target audience might be searching for, and work those in naturally.

If you haven’t revisited yours in a while, it’s worth taking another look. A bio that was written years ago may no longer reflect what your business actually does, and an outdated or poorly written one can undermine an otherwise strong profile.

3. Add some visuals

If you’re posting regularly on X but not seeing much engagement, the type of content you’re sharing could be part of the issue. Visuals remain one of the most effective ways to stop someone mid-scroll, and cut through the noise on social media platforms.

According to a 2025 study by Adilo, which analysed over 3,200 X posts, image posts achieved an average engagement rate of 2.09%, outperforming both video posts and paid ads. That’s a meaningful gap, and it reinforces something we see consistently — posts that give people something to look at tend to perform better than those that don’t.

When it comes to video specifically, shorter is generally better. Videos under 15 seconds tend to see the strongest performance, and GIFs can boost engagement by as much as 55%, making them a lightweight but effective option if you want to add visual interest without the production overhead of a full video.

The broader principle here is straightforward — investing in the visual presentation of your social media assets is almost always worth it , whether that’s a well-designed graphic, a relevant photo, or a short clip that adds context to what you’re saying.

4. Engage With Your Community on X

The way people build connections on X has changed significantly over the years. Twitter Hours — those scheduled hashtag conversations that were popular throughout the 2010s — have largely fallen away, and the platform now offers more structured ways to find and engage with relevant audiences.

X Communities are one of the most useful tools for this. They function similarly to Facebook Groups or Reddit communities, but sit natively within X, allowing users to gather around shared topics, industries, or interests. As of early 2026, posts made within Communities are now visible to everyone on the platform, not just members — which means participating actively in a relevant Community can meaningfully extend your reach beyond your existing followers.

Use X Lists to Stay Organised

X Lists are one of those features that often get overlooked, but for businesses they can be genuinely useful for managing the sheer volume of content that passes through the platform on any given day.

In simple terms, Lists allow you to group accounts into separate feeds that you can browse independently of your main timeline. Rather than scrolling through a cluttered mix of everything you follow, you can create focused views for specific purposes — whether that’s keeping an eye on industry news, tracking conversations from clients, or monitoring what your competitors are posting.

That last use case is particularly valuable; building a private List of competitor accounts means you can keep tabs on their activity without alerting them by following their profiles directly.

It’s worth noting the distinction between public and private Lists. A public List can be seen — and subscribed to — by anyone, which can occasionally be useful if you want to curate a resource others might find valuable.
